book, lyrics, and music by Jonathan Larson
directed by Norah Matthews
April 4-13, 2024
Elstad Auditorium
Gallaudet University’s Theatre and Dance program invites you to experience the pulsating East Village energy of Jonathan Larson’s bohemian musical in its first fully-produced Deaf and American Sign Language (ASL) staging anywhere, one which sheds light on a long-overlooked facet of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s: its devastating and profound impact on the Deaf community already facing adversity in more ways than one. In highlighting the intersectionality of human identity, this production not only pays homage to the original spirit of the musical, but also serves as a poignant testament to the transcendental power of friendship, love, and abiding resilience as timeless touchstones of historically marginalized populations.

VOCA Show: “A Not So Quiet Nocturne”
Thursday April 11 – Sunday April 21 VOCA Show: “A Not So Quiet Nocturne” Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H St NE, Washington, DC 20002, United States VOCA is very excited to present the show called ‘A Not So Quiet Nocturne’ Written by Jaye Austin Williams & Directed by Alexandria Wailes
at ATLAS in Washington, D.C.!
About:
It is the early 1990s in New York City, a decade into the horrific AIDS epidemic. Far beneath the national radar’s concern for the massive deaths of vital, young white men within the gay community, and the anxious, lingering myths and unknowns about the disease, Black, poor folks of all persuasions are suffering and dying at proportionately higher rates – and intergenerational.
Such is the case for Charlyn, a young, Black, Deaf woman who has contracted the disease from her husband, who has now died. She has also just buried their infant daughter, Catherine. We meet Charlyn at Catherine’s gravesite, speaking to her daughter who will never grow up. As we flash backward and forward between Charlyn’s memories of the joys and struggles within the “bare life” that she, her family and friends have navigated, and the present, we witness Charlyn’s blossoming through an unbearable confrontation with her own mortality, as she tries to go on living the unlivable for as long as she possibly can.

The play is performed in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
When:

When:
April 11th – April 21, 2024
Where:
Lang Theater at Atlas Performing Arts Center, Washington, D.C.

GU Webinar: Gene Editing
12:00 pm – 1:30 pm GU Webinar: Gene Editing Elstad Auditorium
800 Florida Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002, United States Live Webcast
The event will be livestreamed on Youtube and Facebook for those who cannot attend in person.
One of the Five Grand Challenges in The Gallaudet Promise is “realizing the value of Deaf people across the spectrum of identities.” Recent advances in gene editing, resulting in deaf children in clinical trials regaining some of their hearing, have made us wonder whether it might be possible to edit genes before birth or early in a deaf person’s life. What implications might this have for our Deaf community?
Join us for a #WeAreGallaudet Conversation Series panel event on gene editing. Gallaudet will begin a conversation regarding gene editing and ask important questions, such as Are we as a community at risk of being an endangered species? and What does this mean for Deaf people and who gets to decide?
Our esteemed panelists and moderator will provide facts and provide further opportunities for conversation.
