Opening Performance Milan 1880 – free for Deaf Community 7pm
Milan 1880 is a new blended deaf-hearing, ASL-English production written by James Caverly (Only Murders in the Building). This play was commissioned by CCBC to support our ongoing initiative to offer blended productions biennially. The show will be directed by Michelle Banks. This production is the most blended one we have produced yet, with 5 Deaf performers, three hearing bilingual performers, and seven hearing English-speaking students. The also chronicles a key moment in Deaf History: the Second International Congress on the Education of the Deaf and Mute in Milan, Italy, 1880. This congress proclaimed that aural education was superior to using sign language in Deaf education, effectively banning sign language education for decades. Caverly has specifically written the five-person American contingent to be performed by Deaf artists, allowing the Deaf community to own and embody this history.

12:15 pm – 1:45 pm Open Captioned Movie: Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910, USA AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND is the untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. The pickets attracted Nazis, Congressman, and a press avalanche. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. With never-before seen footage, four living protesters rescue this forgotten history, revealing the price, and the power, of heeding the impulse to activism.
